Physical Description

A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the image of an angel standing on a sea monster, above the angel is a ring of eight stars, the angel bears a palm branch in the left hand. The top bears the inscription "MUTHIGER THATEN EHRENDER LOHN" (honouring reward for brave deeds). The reverse bears a crowned shield with the monogram "W" surrounded by four flag staffs and a lion. It also bears the inscription "EHRENZEICHEN GESTIFTET AM XXV.APR.MDCCCXXXVI" (award donated on April 25, 1836. On a loop for suspension, with a dark green ribbon.

History

The Life Saving Medal was established by Carl II, Duke of Brunswick, on April 24, 1836. The medal was conferred upon individuals who put their own life in peril in order to save the life or property of another. The medals are engraved with the name of the recipient and the year the medal was conferred.
