The Long Service Award was founded by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August and was conferred upon military personnel with a rank below officer who had rendered faithful service for many years.

The first batch of I Class clasps was awarded from 1848 until 1867, and they were primarily composed of silver gilt.

The second batch of I Class clasps was awarded from 1912 until 1913 and was primarily conferred upon gendarmes and dragoons. These clasps were composed of bronze gilt.
