The Eagle Shield of the German Reich was a non-wearable award donated on November 15, 1922. It was the highest honour during the Weimar Republic and was awarded to honour achievements in the fields of art, culture, the humanities and natural sciences, and the economy.
The bronze medal was mounted on a bronze base. It was designed by Josef Wackerle. The reverse features an inscription tailored to the recipient.
The Eagle Shield was also awarded during the Third Reich. During the Weimar Republic, the decoration was awarded to 20 recipients. In total, about 65 people were honoured.
