History

This medal is a state decoration that was instituted by the Governor of Queensland in 2011. It was conferred upon the members and volunteers of the Queensland Department of Community Safety, the Queensland Police Service, or the Queensland Ambulance Service, who performed outstanding work during the flood and cyclone disaster of summer 2010-2011.

In order to receive the citation, an individual had to have worked at least one shift between December 1, 2010, and February 28, 2011. The work that was performed may have directly involved disaster relief, or it could have been focused on keeping essential services and business open.

The Citation is a white and maroon ribbon that is surrounded by a bronze frame. The four white stripes represent the four emergency service agencies who worked to provide disaster relief, the police, the fire department, the emergency medical service, and the State Emergency Service. On the top and bottom of the bronze frame, there are five sets of three waves, which represent Cyclone Tasha and Cyclone Yasi.

It is estimated that a total of 13,000 citations were awarded.
