History

The Kiribati Cross (Ana Kaibangaki N Ninikoria Kiribati) was established by I. Tabai, the Benetitenti, or President, of Kiribati by the Kiribati National Honours and Awards Act in 1989. The Kiribati Honours System was created to recognise exemplary, meritorious, and distinguished service to Kiribati.

The Cross is conferred upon citizens or other foreigners in recognition of exceptional acts of bravery or selflessness that risks personal safety in the efforts to save the life of another.

Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters AKNK.
