The Kiribati Order of Merit (Boutokan Toronubwain Kiribati) was established by I. Tabai, the Benetitenti, or President, of Kiribati by the Kiribati National Honours and Awards Act in 1989. The Kiribati Honours System was created to reward and recognise exemplary, meritorious, and distinguished service to Kiribati.
The Order of Merit is conferred upon citizens or other foreigners whose performance in a traditional, scientific, or artistic field of endeavour contributes to the reputation or welfare of Kiribati.
Recipients are entitled to the post-nominal letters BTK.
