It was created to recognise valuable citizen and military participation in New Zealand’s efforts to protect and assist East Timor. It has been awarded to civilian members of more than a dozen New Zealand government organisations.

Silver clasps inscribed with “EAST TIMOR” are awarded for additional service of 1 or more years in the operational area.

The Silver Medal features the recipient’s name engraved on the rim.
