The Royal New Zealand Navy Long Service Medal was established by Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand by Royal Warrant on May 6, 1985. It was established to replace the British Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. It is awarded to Navy personnel in recogition of 15 years of service and is backdated to 1977.

Clasps are awarded for each additional 15 years served. For each clasp, a silver rosette is added to the ribbon when worn alone.

The recipient’s name and the name of the ship they served on are engraved on the rim.
