This medal was instituted by Peter the Great. It was awarded to those who participated in the Battle of Kalisz.

The Gold Medal was conferred upon Officers in the Cavalry.

The obverse inscription translates to: "Tsar Peter Alekseevich Sovereign of All Russia", and the reverse translates to: "For Loyalty and Bravery".

The Battle of Kalisz (aka Kalish) occured on October 29, 1706 in Kalisz, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The three hour battle was fought between the aligned Poles, Saxons and Russians of 30,000 soldiers against the smaller Swedish forces of nearly 4,500. The results was a Russian-Polish-Saxon victory at the cost of 4,900 casualties. The Swedish suffered 3,000, including 1,800 prisoners who were eventually returned.
