This medal was instituted in commemoration of the battle near Chemulpo. It was conferred upon survivors of the battle while on the warships the Varyag and Koreyetz.

The obverse inscription translates to: "For the Battle of Varyag and Koreyetz, 27 January 1904 Chemulpo".
