This medal was instituted during the reign of Alexander II in commemoration of the resolution of the military operations where Checnya and Daghestan became part of the Russian Empire. It was awarded to officers, non-commissioned officers, enlisted men, and militia who participated in the Caucasian campaign.

The obverse features the monarch's cipher. The reverse inscription translates to: "For the Subjugation of Chechnya and Daghestan in 1857 1858 and 1859".
