History

This medal was created by Peter the Great in commemoration of the naval battle near Cape Gangut (in southwestern Finland).

The gold medal was conferred upon high-ranking officers.

The medal was issued in an undetermined number of sizes.

The obverse inscription translates to: "Tsar Peter Alekseevich Sovereign of All Russia", and the reverse translates to: "Dedication, and Fidelity. Excellence. Force."
