Cross measures approximately 40x40 mm, and is worn as a neck decoration. Value of higher-end Russian Orders varies greatly; value depends on period and quality of manufacture, provenance, and the maker; as well as value of the Russian currency and general economic situation in Russia.There may be minor differences with the design and size of this cross. A Russian made, pre 1917 manufactured cross is very rare.

History

This Order was founded by Catherine the Great. It was at first created as a purely civilian award. It was conferred upon those who served the state for at least 35 years. In addition, it was conferred upon those who had assisted during emergencies, epidemics, or famine, and those who had saved others from danger. It could also be bestowed upon the clergy and to those who had made distinguished contributions to their professions.

The Non-Christian version of this cross features an image of the Imperial Eagle.
