History

The Medal of Nesterov was established by Presidential Decree № 442 of March 2, 1994, and first awarded the following year.

This medal is the aviation equivalent of the Medal of Ushakov and the Medal of Suvorov, following the development of a separate Russian Air Force.

It is conferred upon Air Force soldiers, air arms of the Russian Army, and other troops for bravery and courage during combat operations, exercises and maneuvers, and proper maintenance of aircraft.

The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "Peter Nesterov".
