Physical Description and Item Details


Nichan ad-Dam, or order of the Blood, instituted around 1840, important jewel in gold and chased silver, openwork and entirely set with diamonds in old or pink cut (226 in total), in the shape of a sun with twelve main rays, decorated of three concentric rows around a larger diamond, it is surmounted by a large knot of articulated ribbon with five loops and two pendants, topped with a vertical loop for the ribbon, horizontal retaining pin on the reverse, hallmark of the Bardo coin on the back of the lower spoke. In a mahogany case sheathed in purple silk velvet. Of the greatest rarity.

History


This Order was conferred upon Tunisian and foreign princes. In exceptional, rare occasions this award was conferred upon foreign dignitaries (usually high level French officials).

This Order was instituted by Ahmed Pasha-Bey in 1837. In 1855, it was modified. It was reorganized on January 16, 1860 and in February 1861 by Mohammed al-Sadiq.
