History


The Order of Pétion at Bolívar (L'Ordre Pétion at Bolívar) was established in Haiti on October 21, 1939. Founded as an award for foreign heads of state and native and foreign diplomats who distinguished themselves in the field of Pan Americanism.

The Order is consisted of Collar, Grand Cross (limited to 20 recipients), Grand Officer (limited to 40 recipients), Commander (limited to 60 recipients), Officer (limited to 80 recipients), and Knight (limited to 100 recipients).

Alexandre Sabès Pétion (1770 – 1818) was the first President of the Republic of Haiti from 1807 until his death, and is considered as one of founding fathers of Haiti. In 1815, he gave sanctuary to the independence leader Simón Bolívar and provided him with material and infantry support. This vital aid played a defining role in Bolivar's success in liberating the countries of the northern of South America.
