History

The Order of the Snake or the Scindia Medal (Mansab-i-Aswadi) was instituted by Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia around 1907. The award may be known by other names and the designation "Scindia Medal" may be incorrect. The Order was conferred in 2 Classes and is believed to have been worn by ruling Maharajas.

The centre medallion of the Star is surrounded by a body of a cobra, whose head is positioned as the 12 o'clock arm of the Star. The cobra serves as a symbol of the state of Gwalior incorporated into the arms and flag.

The II Class is composed of gold.
