Physical Description and Item Details

Medal for the Coronation of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), 1926 - Finely struck in silver, 31 mm, near extremely fine. Footnote: The medal was instituted to mark the coronation of King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), on February 25, 1926. King Prajadhipok was born in Bangkok on November 8, 1893 and educated in England at Eton College and Woolwich Military Academy before being commissioned into the Royal Horse Artillery. On the outbreak of World War I, his brother, by now King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), ordered him back to Thailand where he became a high-ranking military officer. He became king on the death of his brother on November 26, 1925 and was crowned on February 25, 1926. Thailand was not immune from social change and financial crisis and on June 24, 1932 a coup was staged by the People’s Party which then demanded constitutional reform. The king accepted what he regarded as inevitable change but relations with the People’s Party deteriorated to the extent that the king chose to abdicate on March 2, 1935. He moved to England and died at Virginia Water, Surrey, on May 30, 1941.
