This badge was originally instituted during the Kingdom of Bulgaria. It continued to be conferred upon Paratroopers within the Bulgarian Air Force during the People's Republic of Bulgaria with a few design alterations.
There were two main versions of the badges conferred during the People’s Republic of Bulgaria.
The badges issued first, from 1946-1950, feature the image of a small gold parachute on the obverse, and have a surmounting red star, with and without, a sickle and hammer.
The badges issued second, from 1980-1991, feature the image of a bird with outstretched wings on the obverse, and have the surmounting coat of arms of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria from 1971.
