This medal was founded by the Council of Ministers in commemoration of the 90th birthday of Georgi Dimitrov.

It was conferred upon the high ranking public figures and political leaders of national and international communist movements.

The medal was designed by Dimitar Toshev, and it was discontinued in 1991.
