This medal was founded by the State Council and it was conferred upon Bulgarians and foreigners in recognition of service with the International Brigades with Spain’s Republican Army against the Franco’s Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939.
The medal was discontinued in 1991.
