This medal was primarily conferred upon personnel in the Bulgarian armed forces in recognition of service during wartime, peacetime at the front-line, gallantry, or for upholding the security and defence of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria.
The medal was also awarded to Bulgarian personnel within the volunteer detachments, construction troops, transport troops, and the Ministry of the Interior.
It was also known as the Combat Merit Medal, and it was discontinued in 1991.
