This medal was instituted by Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria to reward Bulgarian citizens for acts of extraordinary courage and life saving, on land and sea, during natural disasters, disease, or other life-threatening circumstances.

The reverse inscription translates to “For Life Saving.”

The Type II medals were issued from 1918-1946 during the reign of Boris III and the Regency Government.

These medals feature the portrait of Boris III on the obverse, and the obverse inscription translates to “Boris III, Tsar of the Bulgarians.”
