History

This medal founded by Prince Alexander of Bulgaria, and it was conferred upon Non-Commissioned personnel and civilians in recognition of merit or gallantry in peacetime and wartime.

The medal was instituted as a complimentary award to the Order of Merit.

The obverse inscription translates to "Bulgaria".

The reverse inscription translates to "For Merit".

It was awarded on a solid red ribbon for peacetime merit, and a blue ribbon with silver striped edges for wartime merit.

The Type IV medals were awarded during the Regency and Republican governments, and the medal design underwent a few modifications.

The medals issued by the Regency government were awarded from 1944-1946. They feature a rearing lion on the obverse, and may or may not have a surmounting Imperial crown.

The medals issued by the Republican government were awarded from 1946-1947. They feature a rearing lion on the obverse, and may or may not have a surmounting laurel wreath.

The Bronze Medal was awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers and low-ranking Officials.
