History

This medal was conferred in recognition of humanitarian efforts rendered during World War I, and for philanthropy and services to the Red Cross following the end of World War I.

The medal was originally awarded in two grades, Silver Medal and Bronze Medal.

In 1929, the Bronze Medal grade was discontinued, and a Gold Medal grade was added.

The Silver Medal was issued twice.

The Silver Medals issued first were awarded solely in recognition of philanthropy during World War I. They feature an obverse inscription that translates to “1915 Bulgarian Society of the Red Cross,” and a reverse inscription that translates to “For Gratitude.”

The II Class Silver Medals were issued second, and they were awarded from 1929-1946 to members of the Red Cross in recognition of philanthropy, and for a minimum of 15 years of service to the Red Cross. They feature an obverse inscription that translates to “Bulgarian Society of the Red Cross for Charity,” and a reverse inscription that translates to “For Gratitude.”
