This medal was conferred upon members of the British Navy in recognition of service in a Syrian campaign. Descending medal grades were awarded according to the rank of the recipients, with silver medals awarded to Junior Officers.
This medal is also known as the Medal of Akka.

The reverse features the insignia of Sultan Abdul-Medjid. The obverse features Arabic script, translated as "The Country of Syria and the Fortress of Acre, 1256".
