History

The exact reason for striking this medal is unknown, but is believed to be the first known medal of the Ottoman Empire. It may have been minted in commemoration of the suppression of a rebellion led by Patrona Halil, or for negotiating peace with Iran, or for suppressing the Vahabi Uprisings in Arabia.

The obverse features the cypher of Sultan Mahmud I, and the reverse inscription features an Arabic inscription that translates to "Allah is the greatest of saviours and the most merciful of all."
