The Jewel Medal of King João VI was established in Portugal on May 14, 1824. It was created to reward the Chiefs of foreign Navy forces, who served to João VI during the Liberal Wars.

The Medal was awarded with four classes based on the rank of the recipient. It was awarded mainly to British Officers.

The II Class Medal was awarded 5 times.
