The Marie Cross was founded by Duke Friedrich II and was conferred upon women who had demonstrated distinguished service in the care of wounded and sick soldiers. The award was named after the wife of Duke Friedrich II, Marie Duchess of Anhalt.
The Cross was also awarded to women in recognition of other charitable and altruistic wartime services.
It was worn on a bow ribbon.
