History

The Marie Cross was founded by Duke Friedrich II on January 10, 1918. The cross was conferred upon women who had demonstrated distinguished service in the care of wounded and sick soldiers. It was also awarded to women in recognition of other charitable and altruistic wartime services.

The award was named after the wife of Duke Friedrich II, Marie Duchess of Anhalt. The cross was worn on a ribbon.

The cross was designed and manufactured by Heinzelmann, Dessau.
