Order of Merit for Arts and Sciences, I Class, Type III
Estimated market value:
The Order was originally established by Duke Friedrich I in 1873, and was awarded in recognition of meritorious achievements in the fields of art and science at home and abroad.
It was first instituted in only one class, but in 1912 the order was expanded to include I Class, II Class, and III Class.
The Order was originally worn on a ribbon on the left side. In 1905, the I Class Order was made larger, and it was then worn from the neck by men and on a bow ribbon on the left shoulder by women.
The inscription on the obverse translates to: For Science and Art.
