History

The Fire Brigade Long Service Medal was established under the order of Grand Duke Friedrich I in 1898. It was conferred upon members of voluntary fire departments who distinguished themselves during 40 years of service.

Originally, the decoration for long service in the fire brigade was only a 25 year bar. On August 28, 1898 the statute was updated and the Fire Brigade Long Service Medal for 40 years of exemplary service was created. The prerequisite for the medal was to possess the 25 year bar.

In order to receive the award, the recipient had to have performed uninterrupted service with the fire department. However, absence due to military service was acceptable. It was awarded once a year on the Duke's birthday.
