A Latin cross, constructed of silver gilt. The obverse has a smooth, raised border. The reverse is plain and smooth and bears the engraved name of the recipient. On an ornate loop for suspension, on a black ribbon. Measuring 48mm x 68 mm and weighing 21 grams.
The General Service for Women was founded by Grand Duchess Louise in 1883. It was conferred upon women for long and faithful service in the public and private sectors. It was mainly awarded to drawing, handicraft, and household teachers who were employed part time, or did not have the full status of a teacher.
The cross was awarded in gold and silver, and the reverse was engraved with the name of the recipient and the number of service years. If a higher level was awarded, the lower level cross had to be returned. Upon the recipient's death, the cross did not have to be returned.
By 1906, 126 crosses had been awarded. The General Service Cross for Women was awarded until 1915.
