Physical Description and Item Details


A straight armed cross pattée constructed of bronze. The obverse bears a central circular medallion with the date "1866" encompassed by a border of laurel. The arms of the cross bear a Caduceus. The reverse bears a vertical pinback.

History


The Commemorative Cross for Civilian Doctors was founded by King Ludwig II on February 25, 1867. The cross was awarded to civilian physicians and surgeons who rendered outstanding services in the care of the wounded during the war of 1866. The decoration could also be awarded to physician assistants.
