History

The Order was founded on January 1, 1806 by Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria and it was the highest military Order in the Kingdom of Bavaria.

The Order consisted of three classes: Grand Cross, Commander’s Cross and Knight’s Cross.

Individuals who were awarded the order and were not already nobility were ennobled and given the title of “Ritter von” to add to their family name.

Following the collapse of the Bavarian monarchy in 1918, the Order became obsolete. However, outstanding awards recommendations were issued until 1922.

The Commander Crosses in gold were number from 1 to 69.
