Physical Description and Item Details


An ovular medal constructed of silver. The obverse bears the bust of the duke encompassed by the inscription "CAROLVS D G DVX BRVNSVIG ET LVNEBVRG", within a border of laurel leaves. The reverse bears the image of a horse within an ovular border inscribed with "DEM VERDIENST IN KUNST VND WISSENSCHAFT" topped with a crown. With a crown suspension.

History


The Decoration for Art and Science was founded on April 25, 1908 by Duke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg, while he was acting as Regent of Brunswick. The decoration was conferred upon individuals in recognition of their achievements in the realms of art and science. The II Class decoration was issued with a crown from 1912 to 1918.
