The Medal was established by Prince Regent George (later King George IV of Great Britain and Hanover) in the name of his father, King George III of Great Britain and Hanover. The Medal was established to publicly recognize and award exceptional civilian merit.

The Award was issued in two grades, Silver and Gold.

The Gold Medal was conferred in recognition of particularly outstanding achievements. In order to receive the Gold Medal, an individual had to have first received the Silver Medal.

Type I features the portrait of the Prince Regent George.
