The Medal was issued by King Ernst August of Hanover to publicly recognize and award exceptional civilian merit.
The Award was issued in two grades, Silver and Gold.
Type IV features a portrait of King Ernst August with a larger head that the Type III (1841-1846) medals.
Although the Type IV medals feature King Ernst Augusts’ portrait, they continued to be awarded under King George V until 1878.
