Physical Description

A circular medal constructed of gold. The obverse bears the bust of King Wilhelm IV. The reverse bears the inscription "FÜR XXV JÄHRIGE TREUE DIENST" (for 25 years of loyal service). The edge of the medal is engraved with the recipient's name. On a loop for suspension, with a red and navy blue striped ribbon.

History

The Wilhelm Long Service Medal was founded on March 2, 1837 by King Wilhelm IV. The medal was conferred upon members of the Hanoverian Army to recognize long and meritorious service. The medal was designed by the engraver Fritz in Brunswick. When calculating service time, years at war were counted twice. The Type I medal was awarded from 1837 to 1841.

The Gold Medal was conferred upon recipients with the rank of Non-Commissioned Officer to Corporal for 25 years of service.
