The Medal was founded by King Wilhelm IV and was conferred upon members of the Hanoverian Army to recognize long and meritorious service.

The Gold Medal was conferred upon recipients with the rank of Non-Commissioned Officer to Corporal for 25 years of service.

The medal was designed by the engraver Fritz in Brunswick.
