History

The Wilhelm Long Service Medal was founded on March 2, 1837 by King Wilhelm IV. The medal was conferred upon members of the Hanoverian Army to recognize long and meritorious service. The medal was designed by the engraver Fritz in Brunswick. When calculating service time, years at war were counted twice.

The Gold Medal was conferred upon individuals with the rank of Non-Commissioned Officer to Corporal for 25 years of service.

The Type III medal was awarded from 1846 to 1866. It features the portrait of an older King Ernst August.
