Only two were awarded.
This Order was instituted by George IV and it was awarded to citizens of Britain and Hanover until 1837. After 1837 the Order was only awarded within the Kingdom of Hanover.
From 1815-1841 the Order featured the grades of Grand Cross, Commander, and Knight. It was expanded to include the grades of II Class Commander and Cross of Merit after 1841.
The grades of this Order were conferred within two divisions, the Military Division and the Civil Division. The Military Division awards featured crossed swords, while the Civil Division awards did not have swords.
When Hanover was absorbed by Prussia, the Order became a House Order, and it was conferred by the Royal family of Hanover.
