A circular medal with a raised border, constructed of silver. The obverse features the crowned monogram ‘WK’. The reverse features a wreath of oak leaves, tied at the bottom by a ribbon, with the inscription ‘DEM VERDIENSTE UM DEN STAAT’ in the centre (‘for merit to the state’). On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon.
The Civil Merit Medal was founded by Elector Wilhelm II and was conferred in recognition of civil merit.
The medal was conferred upon low-ranking court and civil servants who rendered long and faithful service within a variety of fields, which benefited the citizens of Hesse-Kassel. It could also be conferred for demonstrating bravery when faced with danger.
The medal was awarded from 1821 until 1832, when it was replaced by the Civil Merit Cross.
