History

The Medal was originally founded by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz and was conferred in recognition of outstanding achievements in the areas of the art and science.

On February 28, 1859, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II created statues for the Medal.

The Gold Medal was worn from around the neck. Women wore the medal on a bow ribbon.

The Type I Medals feature a left facing portrait of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz.
