History

The Merit Medal was instituted by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V and was conferred upon individuals who had rendered exceptional service that benefited not only the Grand Ducal House, but the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz as a whole. It could also be conferred in recognition of praiseworthy deeds and merit in the workplace.

The Silver Medal was awarded to mid-ranking officials and servants at the Mecklenburg-Strelitz court. It was also conferred upon individuals who served at the courts of allied houses.

The Type II medals were renewed on January 1, 1915 by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich VI and they were altered to incorporate his portrait on the obverse.
