The Medal was originally instituted by Duke Friedrich August I with the aim of encouraging military enlistment.
It was conferred upon Non-Commissioned Officers and enlisted men for demonstrating outstanding bravery in war, and during military campaigns.
The recipients could be citizens of Nassau or foreign citizens.
The Type II Medals were issued under Duke Wilhelm I of Nassau, and they were conferred upon individuals who participated in the Battle of Waterloo, as well as in the Spanish Campaign (1808-1813).
