The Cross was founded by Duke Wilhelm and was conferred upon Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and enlisted men who had rendered long and faithful service in the Nassau Military. In order to receive the Award, an individual had to have a history of impeccable conduct.
Before the Award was instituted, long service was marked by chevrons.
The Silver Cross for 22 Years was conferred upon Non-Commissioned Officers and enlisted men.
