History

The Civil Honour Decoration was instituted by Prince Heinrich XX (Senior Line) and was conferred in recognition of exceptional long-term service within a field of labour or in a civil service position.

In 1902, the name of the Honour Cross was changed to Merit Cross.

The Senior Line crosses were worn on a dark blue ribbon with two large red stripes along each exterior edge.

In 1890, the III Class was divided into two divisions (Abteilungen). The cross awarded from 1890 to 1902 is referred to as "Abteilung A".
