The Medal was jointly instituted by Heinrich XIII von Reuss-Greiz, Heinrich XLII, von Reuss-Schleiz, Heinrich LIX von Reuss-Lobenstein, and Heinrich LI von Reuss-Ebersdorf, and was conferred upon military personnel from the Reuss principalities who fought in the war against France from 1814 to 1815.
The infantry battalion from Reuss was composed of around 900 soldiers.
