History

The War Merit Cross, 1914 was founded by Prince Heinrich XXVII (Junior Line) and was conferred upon officers, non-commissioned officers, and enlisted men, who rendered distinguished service during the First World War.

In order to receive the cross, an individual had to have previously received the I Class Iron Cross, or had to have demonstrated outstanding bravery in the face of the enemy.

The cross was primarily conferred upon individuals who served in the units that were commanded by the founder.
