This medal was originally instituted by King Frederick I and it was awarded to recognize exceptional civil merit and services.
The Type I Silver Medals may have been awarded with thin oak leaves wreath on the reverse, a small crown above the obverse monogram, or a large crown above the obverse monogram.
The medals with a large crown were minted in the first issue of the medal, the medals with a small crown were minted in the second issue of the medal, and the medals with the thin oak leaves on the reverse were minted in the third issue of the medal.
